Finding Power and Purpose:
The New Leadership Landscape for Boards

National leader BoardSource President and CEO Anne Wallestad presents on Moments Where Executives Are Called to Lead in the Nonprofit Sector

Anne Wallestad, president and chief executive officer of Washington, D. C-based BoardSource will share her perspective on what’s happening across the nonprofit sector and how to translate that into positive momentum and action here in Oregon. BoardSource is a national organization working to strengthen nonprofit board leadership. Wallestad will present her thoughts and insights at three two-hour Oregon community forums: Portland, Redmond and in Eugene (see schedule below for more information).

“In times of change, board members and executives must be advocates,” said Wallestad in an opinion piece in The Chronicle of Philanthropy earlier this year. “Our missions are far too important to sit on the sidelines while critical decisions are made. The people who depend on us need us to do more. They need us to engage. They need us to educate. They need us to organize. And, yes, sometimes they will need us to fight.”

Nonprofit Association of Oregon is convening the three forums, thanks in part to the generous sponsorship of Bank of the Cascades. All are welcome to attend, particularly nonprofit, business and community leaders who are interested in hearing about the big questions nonprofits face as well as the domino effect this has on other sectors and our communities.

About the Presenter

Anne Wallestad was appointed president & CEO by BoardSource’s board of directors in the summer of 2013, after having served as a key member of BoardSource’s leadership team for more than five years. Since taking the helm in 2013, she has overseen a period of significant growth and change for the organization, including the launch of several new leadership initiatives and the successful implementation of a more streamlined model of program delivery.

A seasoned nonprofit professional, Anne has held leadership positions with a number of local and national organizations. Prior to joining BoardSource’s leadership team in December 2008, she served as the vice president of development at the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund and Leadership Institute, where she helped facilitate – from the staff perspective – a strategic restructuring of the groups’ boards of directors and leadership. Anne is an experienced trainer and facilitator and has worked with boards and volunteer networks to strengthen volunteer management, events management, and fundraising skills. She has held leadership posts at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa; the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network; and the Human Rights Campaign, where she was responsible for partnering with and training leaders in communities targeted for organizational expansion and growth.

Anne serves on the board of Capital City Public Charter School and the regional advisory board for Drake University, where she earned a BA degree in sociology and English.
