People Building Inclusive Cultures: An Exploration of Prevalent Mental Models and Paradigms

The journey towards building an inclusive culture calls for the disruption of mental models and the engagement of people in meaningful conversation and action. The prevalence of mental models that range from “all men and women are created equal” to “let’s embrace each other’s uniqueness” and “you and I have a responsibility in rectifying systemic inequity” collapses and highlights the need to create nuanced approaches to bringing people together. When equalizing power amongst us is the goal, building intentional and productive relationships is the key. Let’s explore these ideas through a conversation.
From this session participants will:
- Gain a deeper understanding of prevalent mental models that encourage and impede equity and inclusion efforts in the nonprofit sector.
- Gain Insight into their own prevailing mental models.
- Have an opportunity to practice and explore new ways of thinking and connecting with others.
This session is intended for nonprofit leaders and staff working to advance organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. While no specific experience in DEI is required, this conversation builds on core concepts of cultural competence, systemic oppression, and privilege. Exploring how these systems are experienced at a personal and organizational level requires an openness to personal growth, the ability to locate one's own experience of power and privilege in society and organizational systems, and a willingness to engage in transformative thinking and action.

About the Presenter
|Eric Buenrostro Azúa, Head of People and Culture, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)
Eric Buenrostro Azúa has built a career in Human Resources and Organizational Development across two countries, Mexico and the United States. He has a college degree in Industrial Relations from the University of Guanajuato, Mexico and a Master’s degree in Applied Psychology (Organizational Development and Training) from Southern Oregon University. As an Organizational Development leader with a focus on Diversity & Inclusion and Employee Engagement programs, Eric has spearheaded employee engagement turn-arounds throughout his career both in the for-profit and non-profit sectors, including cultural organizations and the automotive and food industries.
