Navigating Power Dynamics in Fundraising
Anne Murphy, Empowered Fundraiser
Fundraising is a crucial aspect of nonprofit work, but it often involves complex power dynamics that can be challenging to navigate. This training will explore strategies for setting boundaries, working across power differentials, and addressing imposter syndrome in fundraising contexts.
Topics covered in this training will include:
- Setting boundaries in fundraising: Personal relationships with donors can be a key source of support for nonprofits, but they can also blur the lines between professional and personal relationships. Learn techniques for setting and maintaining boundaries with donors, as well as managing physical and emotional boundaries in fundraising contexts.
- How to work across power differentials: Fundraisers often report to executive directors or board members who hold significant power in the organization. We'll explore strategies for managing power differentials, including how to "assign" development work to higher-ups when necessary, while still maintaining control over the fundraising process.
- Imposter syndrome in fundraising: Many fundraisers experience imposter syndrome - feeling like they don't belong in the role or that they're not skilled enough to do the work. This session will uncover the causes of imposter syndrome in fundraising contexts and provide strategies for overcoming it.
Throughout the training, participants will engage in discussions and activities designed to help them navigate power dynamics in fundraising contexts. By the end of the training, participants will have a deeper understanding of how to set boundaries, work across power differentials, and address imposter syndrome in their fundraising work - ultimately strengthening their ability to support their organization's mission.
