Risk is anything that can derail your nonprofit from accomplishment of its mission. Identification of the various risks to your organization is a critical first step in reducing your vulnerability to them. But what is the second step? And how can an organization manage the changing risks it faces as its programs and services evolve?
Without a defined framework, the risk management function can take a backseat to an organization’s other top priorities. In a busy organization, finding the time to develop and maintain a risk management function can be a challenge. At this session, we will focus on building an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework from the ground up, and review some tools that may be adopted and modified to meet the unique needs of your nonprofit organization.

Melissa Yarnell is the Vice President of Risk for Alliance of Nonprofits for Insurance (ANI). She has 15 years of commercial insurance experience, and has served the nonprofit sector since 2002. Prior to working in risk, Melissa served the group in both underwriting and corporate compliance. Melissa’s strong project management skills have helped keep the group on track when initiating corporate change and making business decisions. Melissa presently serves as facilitator for the group’s Product Development Committee and Claims Committee. Melissa holds a BA in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and an MBA from San Jose State University. She is also a licensed Property and Casualty agent in California.
