Event Description

Title
Leveraging Turbulence: Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Into Culture and Management

Presenter
Cliff Jones, Consultant, Capacity Building Partnerships

In systems thinking, a leverage point is a place in a system's structure where a solution element can be applied. It's a low leverage point if a small amount of change force causes a small change in system behavior. It's a high leverage point if a small amount of change force causes a large change in system behavior.

Turbulence involves conflict and confusion.

Work to diversify, include disenfranchised populations and voices, share power and decision making and/or address inequity often results in turbulence – conflict and confusion.

By learning how to “leverage turbulence” we are exploring how to utilize the momentum of conflict and confusion that is often a stage in the DEI process to deepen and accelerate healthy change. We do this to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into organizational culture and the management process.

What are your classic individual and organizational responses to conflict and confusion? Do you welcome and embrace conflict and confusion related to diversity, equity and inclusion? Try to control it? Try to shut them down? Something else? Do the outcomes to those responses typically achieve what you most want? Do you explore the concept of leverage as you consider intervention and change strategies? Conflict and confusion can be a typical, normal and rational response to new information, new mindsets, new approaches – how might you leverage those reactions to support healthy change?

In this session we will explore:

  • Ways that turbulence surfaces in DEI initiatives
  • Forms of leverage that minimize change force used and maximize positive change outcomes
  • Integrating DEI into an organization's culture
  • Strategies to drive DEI through the existing management and supervisory structures
