Title
Nonprofit Leader as Coach: How to Build and Support Strong Teams - Nonprofit Learning Cohort

Cohort Leader
Anna Young, Principal, Anna Young Leadership Coaching

Are you interested in building your coaching skills to support your leadership and management style, while at the same time having the opportunity to explore some of your own professional challenges within a safe and confidential space? Would you like to expand your understanding of coaching and how to support your team members in ways which lead them to have greater autonomy and ownership of their work, as well as building greater work satisfaction? Do you want to explore ways to be a supportive leader and manager within the constraints of working remotely?

This five-session interactive series will provide you with coaching tools and frameworks, while allowing you practice these with your peers, using real-life challenges that you are facing, working with an experienced executive and leadership coach. Each session will tap into some of the brain-science behind creating supportive working environments. Participants will receive tools and templates that they can use themselves as well as share with their teams.  The sessions are designed to be applicable within the remote working environment as well as translate to a return to the workplace context.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will have:

  • Built an understanding of the critical role coaching approaches can play for them as leaders
  • Become familiar with and confident in  using coaching best practices and tools within their teams.
  • Had the opportunity to practice and apply these skills in providing peer support to each other.
  • Been able to tackle a leadership challenge they are currently facing in a safe, supportive, confidential environment.

Over the course of the work together we will: learn new tools; use real life challenges to gain new perspectives and pathways forward;  and, practice the role of ‘leader as coach’.

In between sessions participants will have the opportunity to apply and reflect on how these tools are applicable in their day to day roles.

Outline

Apr 9

Kick-Off and Introductions:

Introductions. Establishing a safe and confidential space.  Exploration of personal leadership styles and some of the philosophy behind coaching as a leader and when where appropriate. In between sessions: think about a challenge that you are working on that you would appreciate support in.

Session 2

Apr 16

The Art of the Question and Creating the Right Environment:

A lot of ‘coaching’ is about asking the ‘right question’ in a way that opens up new thinking.  The one that will help someone have new insights about a problem they have been struggling with. In this session we will look at and practice  questions that lead to insights and unlock new solutions as well as explore ways in which we can help people get their brains into ‘solution-seeking’ mode.

Session 3

Apr 23

Putting it into Practice:

In this session we will apply the tools and what we have learned so far to support each other in thinking through a particular challenge. The aim is for each participant to walk away from this session have practiced the coaching mindset and also been able to develop new ways of thinking about a challenge that they are managing.

Session 4

Apr 30

Managing Stress and Burnout:

When your team members can’t think for themselves how can we support them to take the necessary steps to be able to return to a state of balance? And what about when it happens to us? In this session we will learn and commit to practices that support well-being.

Session 5

May 7

Continuing the Journey:

Is your backpack well stocked? In this final session we will revisit the challenges that we brought into this series and reflect upon what has shifted and where we might continue to need support. We will also look at what additional tools and resources will be useful to help us continue on.
