Cliff Jones, Consultant Partner at Capacity Building Partnerships, offers a holistic approach to supervision. He has helped hundreds of supervisors in nonprofit settings develop skills and supervision methods that really make a difference.

In this two-part series, we will explore the most essential elements of a supervisor’s role with a diversity, equity and inclusion lens. We will offer insight into the specific challenges of supervision in the nonprofit environment to help you identify concrete goals and changes that you can implement with individual staff and teams. We will examine strategies to address unclear expectations between staff and supervisor, ambivalence about authority, low pay, and heavy workloads.

Part One introduces three supervision frameworks with a lens of advancing equity and inclusion. Part Two focuses on core supervision skills, application, and practice.

In this two-part series, participants will gain insight into:

  • Four key functions of supervision
  • Building a feedback rich culture
  • Strategies to get good people to stay
  • Dealing with staff performance difficulties
  • Recognizing the impact of cultural/style differences in supervision
  • Organizational systems to support supervision

Whether you have the title of supervisor or not, this workshop will help you develop the techniques to build staff ownership, encourage joint problem-solving, and help staff experience success and satisfaction in working together. “Effective Supervision” focuses on practical applications to build upon the supervision skills you've already developed or are beginning to develop and learn approaches to increase equity and inclusion in your workplace to make a difference in your organization.

This session is designed for both new and experienced supervisors in nonprofit organizations. The session will include techniques and strategies for program managers, unit leaders, supervisors, and lead workers.

About the Presenter

Cliff Jones, Consulting Partner, Capacity Building Partnerships

Cliff Jones is Consulting Partner at Capacity Building Partnerships. He is an organizational development consultant and a human rights activist with over 30 years of experience in working in nonprofit, government, labor and for-profit organizational development. He has experience as a frontline staff, supervisor, project manager, and executive director. He has been working in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion for over 30 years. He was a staff consultant with NAO for 25 years. Cliff has served on the boards of MRG Foundation, Funding Exchange Foundation, Oregon Minority AIDS Coalition, Multnomah Legal Service Workers Union, and Peer Counseling Community. He has been a trainer for the Black Leadership and Community Development Institute and is a recipient of Nordstrom’s Cultural Diversity Community Service Award.
