Event Description

Title
Embedding Equity and Inclusion in Your Organization

Cohort Facilitator
Alexis Braly James, CEO, Construct the Present

Equity and Inclusion is a journey that we all must take to make a more equitable and just society. As “public benefit” organizations, nonprofits are at the center of this work.

An Equity and Inclusion lens is like a pair of glasses. It helps you see things from a new perspective. By always asking some intentional questions, we can thread equity and inclusion throughout our work. An Equity Lens is something you use daily; it’s essential to ensure we are asking ourselves the questions that will make us think about being equitable and inclusive in every aspect of our work and interactions. In this five-week cohort, we will support organizations at the beginning of their equity journey to collaborate on best practices and support your leadership through the newly released NAO E&I Lens course. This five-session interactive series will help you identify ways to further your mission through more equitable and inclusive practices.

Please note: This course is for any nonprofit staff, board, or volunteer member at the early stages of an equity journey and will help guide you on the beginning steps.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. Understand basic concepts of DEI and how an Equity and Inclusion Lens works.
  2. Gain insights on biases and open paths to new understandings of intersectionality.
  3. Practice applying a DEI Lens to our daily work.
  4. Make commitments to continue this path and expand our journey in DEI.

Outline

Session 1

May 4

Welcome, introductions, community agreements, and considering our diversity.

Session 2

May 11

Check assumptions - question our own ideas and biases and open up to new ways of understanding.

Session 3

May 18

Ask About Inclusion - asking intentional questions to thread equity and inclusion throughout our work.

Session 4

May 25

Apply to your work - apply equity and inclusion to specific areas of work by asking some practical questions and learning from examples

Session 5

Take Action - commit ourselves to continuing to use the information we learn in this work. It is not a one-time action. Being a change agent is a lifelong learning process of asking questions so we can apply (and re-apply) insights to action
