We are in the midst of a sector-wide change in analyzing, understanding, and taking action to address disparities rooted in histories of bias, discrimination, and oppression. Locally, many organizations and collaborative efforts have courageously challenged decades of analysis and practice, creating a rich environment for growth and change. More and more, it has become the expectation and the standard for nonprofits to meaningfully integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into every aspect of their service delivery, operation, management, and governance.
Effectively leading for diversity, equity, and inclusion requires a broad range of skills that are not easily acquired and frequently involve leading outside of one’s knowledge and comfort zone, which risks exposing deficits, negative scrutiny, and criticism. On the other hand, slow, safe, careful change does not provide the leadership needed to change ourselves, others, organizations, and systems—and it fails to respond to the emerging standards within the sector and the real needs within organizations and their constituencies.
With generous support from the Allen Foundation, NAO consultants developed a framework, curriculum, and methodology in response to the leadership challenge pattern that has been emerging over many years. After facilitating two capacity development cohorts, we would like to share the framework and lessons learned with a broader range of leaders in the nonprofit sector. Join us for three half-day EILN sessions from September to November, where we will take a deep dive into each element of the framework and explore how they operate together to create more powerful impact.
September 8: Increasing Awareness & Knowledge
October 13: Taking Action & Changing Behavior
November 10: Changing & Transforming Systems
Each month we will explore working at the individual, group, team, and organizational level—as well as at a systems level. We invite anyone interested in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion to come to one or all of these hands-on sessions to develop skills and support their leadership in building more diverse, inclusive and equitable nonprofit organizations.
About the Presenter
Cliff Jones is a human rights activist with over 30 years’ experience in social services, community education, and human rights advocacy. He has experience as a frontline staff, supervisor, project manager, and executive director. He is co-founder of Tools for Diversity, a comprehensive curriculum led by a multi-cultural team that addresses problems caused by discrimination and prejudice and supports building culturally competent organizations.
Cliff has served on the Boards of McKenzie River Gathering Foundation, Funding Exchange Foundation, Oregon Minority AIDS Coalition, Multnomah Legal Service Workers Union, and Peer Counseling Community. He has been a trainer for the Black Leadership and Community Development Institute and is a recipient of Nordstrom’s Cultural Diversity Community Service Award.
