Cliff Jones, Senior Consultant, Nonprofit Association of Oregon

Equity and inclusion are both a moral imperative and good for nonprofit business and our society. Nonprofits are stronger when every board and staff member takes action in this direction.

Equity, as it relates to group differences, focuses on promoting justice, impartiality, and fairness within the procedures and processes of institutions or systems, as well as their distribution of resources. Tackling equity issues requires an understanding of the underlying or root causes of outcome disparities within our society. Inclusion focuses on the behaviors and practices that seek out, invite, welcome, allow, engage, involve or in other ways include broad participation-- particularly of disenfranchised and underrepresented groups-- in information sharing, events, dialogue, input, creative initiatives, support, problem solving, decision making, and sharing of resources and control.

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Explore inclusion and equity from the individual, group and systems levels
  • Learn how to develop the basic knowledge, skills, attitude and behaviors needed to support and lead equity and inclusion work within their nonprofit
  • Gain tools for effectively partnering across differences
