Event Description

Title
Lessons on Equity, Diversity & Loyalty through the Stories of Unsung Heroes

Presenter
Gideon F. For-mukwai, Author, Educator and Story Warrior

During this training, participants will learn about equity, diversity and loyalty through the story of an unsung hero. Participants will engage in a “life story performance” that showcases the tragic life of York, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804, 1805 and 1806. Unlike the other members of the Corps of Discovery, he was Captain Clark's slave. His status notwithstanding, the records show that he contributed to the expedition with utmost honor and loyalty.

Human history is fraught with many mysteries, myths and unsung heroes. By looking back at yesterday's unsung heroes, we remind ourselves of the need to acknowledge today’s disparities and challenges in our communities. Without acknowledging our past stumbles, how can we fully know how we got here?

York’s journey from St Louis to Oregon and back, his trials and tribulations, will help us to better understand underdogs. It turns out, every organization has underdogs and underlings with incredible potential. With the right story, and approach, every organization can unleash the hidden potential and loyalty of all their people.

The Lewis & Clark expedition is reminiscent of some of the challenges and opportunities organizations encounter today. It is time to turn those pitfalls into windfalls by starting with the right story that engages, encourages and empowers everyone.
