Event Description

Strategic Financial Management Workshop for Nonprofit Executive Directors

Scott Schaffer, Principal, Public Interest Management Group

Strategic financial management is critical to nonprofit success and sustainability. It involves actively building, monitoring and adjusting the organization’s business model. Successful CEOs must get in front of the organization’s financial strengths, weaknesses, risks and opportunities, and keep financial health and sustainability in the scope.

This one-day workshop for nonprofit CEOs provides an overview of key strategic financial management concepts, as well as practical methods for fulfilling this role within organizations. Using a combination of case studies and real-world financial data, the session is hands-on and discussion-oriented. It is designed to help participants carry out this essential role.

Target Audience

This session is specifically for executive directors/chief executive officers of nonprofit organizations with annual operating budgets of $1 million or greater. This session is not appropriate for Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) or Board members. Only one staff person per organization should attend.

  • Familiarity with budgeting, typical financial statements, and fiduciary responsibilities of nonprofit governance

Participant Takeaways

Participants will leave the workshop with:

  • Understanding of the key elements of their organization’s business model, and where refinement can help achieve strategic goals
  • Knowledge of the five critical data metrics for financial leadership
  • Understanding of the concept of program profitability and how to apply it
  • Greater confidence discussing/presenting financial information to boards and funders.
