Title
COVID-19: Ask The Experts - Characteristics of Resilient Leadership

Subject Matter Expert
Vanessa A. Becker, Senior Principal Consultant, V Consulting & Associates Inc.

The complex challenges nonprofits face in light of the COVID-19 crisis calls on us as leaders to gain a deeper understanding of attitudes, skills and behaviors of resilient leaders.

In this session you will learn how resilient leaders turn disruptive changes, conflicts or crises from disaster into a growth opportunity, both personally and organizationally. Participants will gain insight into how they can assess their own leadership styles, identify primary change stressors in their organizations, and leave with areas of focus to become more resilient and adaptable to change.

About the Subject Matter Expert

Vanessa A. Becker, Senior Principal Consultant, V Consulting & Associates Inc.

Vanessa is a native Oregonian who has devoted her life to making communities a better place. She offers over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit and government sectors. Her experience spans grassroots nonprofits, executive government administration and successful corporate business, making her a successful “tri-sector athlete.”  Vanessa founded V Consulting with the hope and intention of using her training, expertise and talents to improve the efficacy and impact of nonprofits. Some of her most notable successes include 12 years as a successful executive director, several appointments to governmental based advisory boards, serving as a publicly elected trustee of a higher education institution and chairing multiple nonprofit boards. Vanessa has worked with organizations of all sizes and geographical focus areas.  Her breadth spans volunteer-based startup nonprofit organizations to $200 million public institutions, frontier rural to inner city urban communities, and nearly everything in between. Vanessa also has served as an advisor and grant reviewer for many funding bodies, including state and private funders, United Way and for several federal grant funding bodies.

Vanessa speaks regularly about resilience and leadership, largely focusing on her personal experience leading Umpqua Community College through the largest mass shooting in state history in 2015. Since 2015, Vanessa has shared leadership lessons learned at several FBI-sponsored trainings, Department of Justice events, legislative events, Harvard Kennedy School of Crisis Leadership and many national education sector leadership events across the United States. Vanessa’s most recent work includes working for a local nonprofit public health organization on the COVID-19 pandemic, including crisis communication and leadership.     Vanessa is an adaptable, dynamic and motivating speaker, infusing real- life experience and academic framework with storytelling into all of her speaking engagements.
