Event Description

Title
In Community with Central Oregon's 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth

Presenters

Central Oregon is home to over 2,000 youth who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+. Youth and adults who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ in Central Oregon have been increasingly under attack from homophobic and transphobic rhetoric, verbal and physical harassment and assault. In many ways, the oppression and exclusion that 2SLGBTQIA+ youth face is compounded by intersectional identities and can lead to heightened feelings of isolation that can come from living in rural communities like ours.

As adults working in the community, queer and trans youth should be able to turn to us for support throughout their identity development in response to bullying and harassment, to celebrate their identities, or when they have questions or need access to resources. Our region has a robust grassroots community of care for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth composed of folks with intersectional identities that have lived experience and are practicing allyship to contribute to direct, visible support for our queer and trans youth.

Part of being in a community with 2SLGBTQIA+ youth is building a bigger tent of safer and more supportive adults throughout our community than can co-create 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusive leadership, policymaking, education, recreation, healthcare and homelife for queer and trans youth.

  • Come for a primer on sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Learn ways to be inclusive of, celebrate and uplift 2SLGBTQIA+ identities
  • Identify your ‘niche’ to show up authentically and “in community” with Central Oregon’s 2SLGBTQIA+ youth

For accommodation requests, please contact us at [email protected]. Advanced notice of at least 10 days is appreciated.

About the Presenters

Dana Gulley (He / Him or They / Them), Partner, Facilitator and Consultant, Allyship In Action

Dana has spent the past five years working in support of new economies that center equity, justice, and the possibility of flourishing, diverse communities that function in harmony with thriving ecosystems. He is most proud of his podcast project, Decade of Courage, which created space for him to metabolize, unlearn and reimagine how to move towards being in right relationship with himself and his community.

Dana got their start facilitating diversity and inclusion trainings in 2008-09 while an undergraduate student at the University of Vermont where they volunteered with the LGBTQ+ student group, Free to Be, and New England’s largest gathering on transgender identities, issues and intersections: the Translating Identity Conference (TIC).

Dana spent his twenties focused on environmental issues ranging from clean water to energy efficiency, first through public service working in the Vermont State House and on Capitol Hill, then through community engagement and advocacy with the NY-based non-profit Riverkeeper. While working in New York’s Hudson Valley, Dana received mediation training through the Westchester Mediation Center in 2013. He is passionate about mediation as an empowering, dignified tool for self-determination, repair and healing.

Dana is a member of the Central Oregon Trans Health Coalition and Central Oregon Community Action, Resources and Education for Schools (CARES). They were formerly an instructor in the Sustainable Innovation MBA program at the University of Vermont where they obtained their degree in 2017. They also serve as a member of the Board of Advisors for the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources where they earned their B.S. in Environmental Studies in 2010. Dana enjoys swimming in lakes, biking and spending time with their partner, Anya and sweet pup, Juneau.
