About this event

This event is provided by Live Wire Radio

After three live shows as a part of the Bumbershoot music and arts festival
in Seattle, Live Wire will be opening its fall season in Portland at
Revolution Hall on September 26th. The show is taped in front of a live
audience and broadcast on over 70 public radio stations across the country.

The show will feature former Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi along with Infinitely Polar Bear filmmaker Maya Forbes. Forbes’ film, starring Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana, is based on her childhood growing up with a bipolar father and her sister, China Forbes, who is now the lead singer for
Portland-based band Pink Martini. China, who contributed a song on the
film’s soundtrack, will also perform on the September 26th show along with
acclaimed indie band Blitzen Trapper and Soft Sleep (fronted by former Lonely Forest guitarist Tony Ruland).

The fall season runs every other Saturday evening until its December 19th
season finale and will continue to feature the show’s signature blend of
comedy, conversation, and music with guests from across the creative spectrum. Other guests this fall will include food writer Ruth Reichl, free
solo climber Alex Honnold, essayist Meghan Daum, iconic B-movie actor Bruce
Campbell, and more to be announced soon. More information about Live Wire and the rest of the fall season at www.livewireradio.org.

GUESTS:

Aasif Mandvi
You may know Aasif as the “Senior Foreign-Looking Correspondent” on The Daily Show, but he has since moved on to HBO, where he’s a writer, actor and co-producer of The Brink, a comedy series based on the geopolitical crisis in Pakistan. (No, it doesn’t sound funny. But it really is.)

Maya Forbes
An Emmy-nominated writer and producer (The Larry Sanders Show), Forbes wrote and directed Infinitely Polar Bear, an autobiographical film about growing up in Cambridge, MA with her sister China (of the band Pink Martini) and her
bipolar father. The film stars Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana.

MUSIC:

Blitzen Trapper
Joining the show right before leaving on a nationwide, 33-stop tour, this
experimental country/folk/pop ensemble is now releasing their eighth album,
“VII” on Vagrant Records.

China Forbes
The lead singer for Pink Martini and a solo singer, China wrote the song “The Northern Line” for the Infinitely Polar Bear soundtrack.

Soft Sleep
Seattle-based band fronted by former Lonely Forest guitarist Tony Ruland.
They released their debut self-titled EP in the spring of 2015, creating
dreamy soundscapes that make you nostalgic for things you haven’t yet
experienced.

Live Wire is radio variety for cultural omnivores. It’s music from
up-and-coming bands, original comedy, performance and scintillating
interviews with writers, filmmakers, comedians and people who think cool
thoughts. Hosted by Luke Burbank (Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me, Too Beautiful
to Live), the show is taped in front of a live audience and is aired on
public radio stations around the country.
