Today, more and more nonprofit thought leaders and funders are encouraging the use of coaches as a resource to help individuals and organizations succeed in their chosen missions.
Philanthropic agencies, such as the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, have initiated extensive programming around the value and impact of coaching in the nonprofit sector, and how it works best. Their studies of nonprofit leaders found that:
“… 67 percent of coaches surveyed by the CAP Project chose to develop leadership skills/confidence as a high priority. A majority of coaches also gave high priority to enhancing management skills or confidence, developing a better balance of the personal and professional in their lives, and managing organizational change more effectively.”
The Coaching and Philanthropy Project (CAP) is funded by W.K. Kellogg Foundation, The Harnisch Foundation, James Irvine Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund.

About the Presenters
Over ten years ago after working in project management positions in the entertainment and construction industries for most of his career, Jonathan Abramson transitioned into the nonprofit sector. He has had many fulfilling moments working on all sides of the table with nonprofits—as staff, committee member, volunteer, and independent counsel. Jonathan’s company avenue2possibilities LLC trains nonprofit leaders and staff to focus on why they do what they do from the 50,000 feet level and aim at their vision for what is possible for their community far above the myriad details of day-to-day operations. Jonathan has Associate Certified Coach credentialing with NeuroLeadership Group™. He finds their neuroscience-based coaching process helps his clients quite literally think better and achieve their goals faster than they have previously experienced.Ann Kohler, a member of the NAO Executive Transition Services team for the past seven years, brings more than three decades of nonprofit and public sector executive management experience to bear when working with clients seeking coaching/mentoring assistance in rounding out their skill sets. Her extensive background in organizational development and operations informs her approach. Ann engages clients to try out new strategies in their everyday work environment by using real time examples to stimulate alternatives, test out solutions, and debrief effectiveness. She works with individuals to develop ongoing sources for learning and support. Ann, as well as other ETS colleagues, is available via NAO.
Chris Larson is co founder of A&C Consulting, a Portland Oregon based company working throughout the U.S. to educate nonprofit boards on improving governance practices and providing executive coaching focused on the needs of nonprofit executive leaders. Chris has been a coach for over 20 years and brings additional knowledge from 10 years of operations, management, client relations, project management and professional development as an Operations Director. Prior to founding A&C Consulting Chris trained and managed coaches for a San Francisco based company providing coaching services to Universities.
Mary-Beth Frerichs is Principal and Lead Executive Coach at The Driver Group, LLC. With well over two decades of experience in human resources management, she is a certified executive coach and trainer whose expertise spans the employment lifecycle, employee development, conflict resolution, strategic decision-making, and career transitions navigation. Executives, directors, managers, and employees seek out Mary-Beth’s skilled and intuitive guidance to help them meet challenges, set goals, and excel as professional individuals.
