Invite your Board Chair to join you and fellow nonprofit leaders on November 16, 2016 for an engaging discussion about Board Chair-Executive Director (ED) Relationships. The panel will share the leadership practices that have made a difference in effectively managing and governing their organizations, with particular attention to fostering a spirit of partnership between the Board Chair and ED. Discussion topics will include:

• Setting clear expectations for Board Chairs and CEOs/EDs
• Practical tips for addressing style differences, communication, and other challenges
• Steps to create satisfying and productive Board Chair-ED partnerships
• Practices of Board Chairs and EDs to help one another be successful in their respective roles

About the Presenters

Betsy Weedman was born in Portland, OR and raised since the age of four in Bend. Betsy has been the Public Relations and Marketing Manager for Bigfoot Beverages (formally Pepsi Bend, LLC) since February 1998. She has followed the example set by her parents and family over the years and believes it is of ultimate importance to give back to the community that you live in, not to only better the community, but to better the lives of others. She has volunteered and served on boards and committees for many local organizations. In addition to the COCC Foundation Board she has served on the following boards: University of Oregon Alumni Association, Bend Chamber of Commerce, High Lakes Elementary PTA, High Desert Museum Community Advisory Board, Bend Business PAC, Bend Chamber of Commerce, as well as on numerous committees. Betsy received her B.A. from the University of Oregon, and is a proud mother of three children and three stepchildren.

Eli Ashley grew up in Seattle, New York, and Washington D.C. He has a graduate degree in Marketing and Urban Development from the University of Washington. Eli spent over 30 years in nonprofit arts and service organizations, such as Pacific NW Ballet, King Co. Arts Comission, Capitol Theatre in Yakima, Broadway Center for Performing Arts in Tacoma, and the Tower Theatre in Bend. He has also consulted for nonprofits, done public speaking, and served on the board of several nonprofit organizations in the Seattle and Tacoma area. Eli is a current member, and former chair, of the board of City Club of Central Oregon. Eli is married to Dottie, a native Oregonian; their current household consists of four horses and three dogs.

Justin Phillips works in Corporate Finance for the Les Schwab Tire Center headquarters in Bend. Prior to that he worked at the Target headquarters in Minneapolis, MN, and for Jeld-Wen in both Bend and Klamath Falls. Justin received a B.S. from the University of Oregon and an MBA from Dartmouth College.

Ken Wilhelm has provided executive leadership for United Way of Deschutes County since 1988. He has direct responsibility for all business affairs of the organization including strategic planning, fiscal accountability, resource development, community engagement, community impact, staffing, and day-to-day operations.

Shelly Smith, KIDS Center Executive Director, holds a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Seattle Pacific University and worked for non-profits in Seattle for over 20 years primarily focused on child and family services. Before moving to Bend she worked with homeless and runaway teens in the Seattle area where she learned that nearly all of those who came through their doors had a history of physical and/or sexual abuse. She joined KIDS Center in 2008, with the goal to intervene with children and families earlier in the cycle and get ahead of repeat victimization that so many child abuse victims face.

Zak Boone is the Executive Director of the Central Oregon Community College Foundation.  Zak received his Masters of Public Administration with a focus in nonprofit management at Portland State University, and Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from Lewis & Clark College. Prior to coming to COCC he was the Associate Director for the Deschutes Land Trust.  He has worked in respected charities in Central Oregon since 2007, including the Executive Director for Ronald McDonald House.  Zak’s areas of experience encompass community engagement, board & committee support, planned giving, major donor fundraising, relationship cultivation, event planning, media relations, and volunteer management. Zak’s wife Jennifer is a licensed professional counselor in Bend, and they have two daughters, age 15 and 10.
