Keeping volunteers excited and engaged is key to their effectively supporting your mission. It is often a matter of finding the right roles for volunteers to play and knowing the best strategies for guiding them. If you're looking for ideas and strategies to increase and sustain volunteer engagement in your organization and mission, join us for this session of NNCO.

Learn to:

  • Design high-impact, meaningful volunteer positions
  • Shift from volunteer management to volunteer engagement
  • Take advantage of diverse styles to help volunteers succeed
  • Engage staff and volunteers as collaborative partners and leaders
  • Innovate and experiment to maximize volunteer effectiveness

About the Presenters

Betsy Warriner

Betsy Warriner founded and served as the Executive Director for Volunteer Insights, which transitioned into Volunteer Connect, the Central Oregon regional volunteer center. Since Volunteer Connect's core services moved to Better Together, Betsy established a consulting business to help volunteers, volunteer managers, and nonprofit leaders create and carry out their next steps in community leadership. Previously, she was the Service-Learning Coordinator at Seattle University and then at Portland Community College, and she worked with the Volunteer Center in Portland. Betsy holds an MA in Teaching degree from Harvard University and a PhD in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Kathleen Joy

Kathleen Joy became the Executive Director at Oregon Volunteers in 1998 following a 25-year career in volunteer engagement, nonprofit management and international consulting on NGO organizational development. She lives in a colorful old Victorian house in Portland with her husband, son, a recently adopted elderly cat, and an old beagle/foxhound named Speke (after one of the British explorers who discovered the headwaters of the Nile).
