Presenter
Marc Smiley, Principal, Solid Ground Consulting
Leadership has never been more important. Board members care and want to contribute, but it’s easy to be passive when you’re unclear of your role and how you can help make a difference. Knowledge truly can become power.
To be effective, board members need to know what is expected of them, and want to know what best practices look like. This session of the Rogue Valley Nonprofit Network will provide practical, applicable, powerful tools to help understand and support board engagement and effectiveness. As board leaders, it will help you and your colleagues step in and fulfill the vital governance role your board needs. For staff, it will give you strategies for supporting and encouraging board engagement, and steering clear of co-dependent behavior.
Marc will share his knowledge and experience of working successfully with boards, both as an Executive Director and as a Board Member and Chair. He will identify strategies for developing your board's leadership and commitment to your organization and offer theoretical and practical ideas to guide your board's growth.
Learn how to:
- Develop a strong recruiting and orientation program for board members with leadership in mind
- Strategically analyze board strengths and organization needs
- Manage board-staff roles and lines of authority, and how to manage shared expectations
- Help the board set and assess board leadership goals
