Ford Institute Leadership Program
The Effective Organizations workshop is designed to enhance the capacity of rural community leaders to “get things done” — developing skills and knowledge for leadership and management of smart, effective organizations that can make a bigger impact, and thereby infuse the community with vitality. The workshop provides practical strategies and tools for success.
Standard topics we cover include:
- Planning Wisely: planning cycle, applications and tools
- Financial Management: decision-making, transparency, accountability and compliance
- Resource Development: sources, individual fundraising strategies and skills, grants
- Board Development: roles, responsibilities, engagement strategies
- Supervision: supervisory cycle, styles and skills
- Volunteer Program Management: key program elements, recruitment strategies
- Effective Teams and Meetings: stages of development, core functions, getting results
- Communication: key skills, managing conflict
- Making Your Organization’s Case for Support: tips and opportunities for practice
Who should participate?
This workshop is open to Canby area residents who are interested in learning more about building smart, effective organizations that make a bigger impact. It is an opportunity to gather for rich discussion, peer learning and networking.
- Specifically, this is a great workshop for board members, staff and lead volunteers of nonprofit and community service organizations. It can also be beneficial for local government, service districts and school, health and other local institutions.
- We welcome and encourage more than one person from an organization to attend! This helps participants successfully bring the learning back to their organizations.
Who leads the workshop?
The Ford Institute partners with the Nonprofit Association of Oregon (NAO), Rural Development Initiatives (RDI) and Human Systems to deliver programs across the state.

When, where and how long is the workshop?
The workshop takes place over two weekends. Participants are expected to attend all sessions. If you have a conflict that can’t be avoided, you may request partial attendance.
- Session I: Friday March 8, 4:30 – 8:30 p.m. & Saturday March 9, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Session II: Friday April 26, 4:30 – 8:30pm & Saturday April 27, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
What resources do we receive with participation?
- A high quality two-day workshop, with food provided.
- A training binder chock full of organization development tools and resources.
- After the workshop, participants and their organizations have access to a pool of 60 hours of coaching support from NAO.
- An opportunity to learn about other resources available through NAO and the Institute.
Is there a cost? Is food provided?
The Ford Institute is making a major investment in rural vitality across the state, and believes in the power of bringing people together in their own communities, over food, to build their capacity work together to get things done. As such:
- Delicious Friday dinner, as well as Saturday breakfast, lunch, and snack are provided.
- The Ford Institute offers this workshop at no cost — it is FREE to the community!
