Online Event

About this event

Succession planning is one of the most critical business planning processes at a nonprofit and one of the most-often ignored. One minute all board positions are filled, your staff team is stable, and the mission is being fulfilled. And then you inadvertently discover that half the board terms off next year, and your Executive Director won the Powerball and is leaving you next month. Surprise, surprise, everyone leaves their role at a nonprofit organization, and the show goes on. What sort of show you have is based on your succession plan, or lack thereof.

Join Kari Anderson, Principal with Incite! Consulting, for this five-week cohort on board and staff succession processes for small, growing rural nonprofits. We’ll discuss what succession planning really is and why it’s an integral part of a healthy nonprofit. We’ll dissect the role each of us plays in ensuring that our nonprofits thrive—both while we’re here and when we’re gone. This cohort is intentionally designed to support leaders of small nonprofits based in rural communities in Oregon. Whether your organization is all-volunteer or has staff, succession planning is key to ensuring a smooth transition of leadership with minimal disruption.

Space is limited. Interested participants must register by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27.

Cohort Guidelines:

  • This learning cohort is intended to support small 501(c)(3) nonprofits in rural communities in Oregon.
  • Limit is 15 individuals per cohort with no more than two representatives from one organization.
  • Participants make a commitment to attend all sessions so we can collectively work together and build a network of support.
  • Conversations will be held as confidential to allow for depth and breadth of exploration.
  • Participants will help guide the sessions and materials to meet their priorities.

An overview of what succession planning really is: a risk management responsibility of the board and a staff development opportunity for Executive Directors.

We’ll cover staff and volunteer recruitment, retention, development, and “right sizing” roles and positions. Hiring your first staff and managing volunteers requires good supervision, a solid recruitment effort, and clear expectations.

We’ll review board member identification, recruitment processes, development, building board leadership, and the importance of moving on.

We’ll learn how to create an Emergency Leadership Transition Plan to address the timely delegation of duties and authority whenever there is an unexpected transition or interruption in key leadership.

We’ll explore how to “on-board deliberately,” helping new board chairs and staff leaders feel confident and find their own voices.

$175 for NAO Members
$235 for Nonmembers

You will receive a registration confirmation email. A link to access each weekly virtual cohort session will be sent to registered participants by the Cohort Facilitator prior to each session.
