BCA Skills Day for the Arts

About this event

Business for Culture & the Arts (BCA) will host a ‘Skills Day for the
Arts’ an opportunity fro arts and culture managers to attend workshops and customized one-on-one consulting from business professionals in the areas including finance, marketing and human resources. The one-day professional development event is part of BCA’s Business Volunteers for the Arts.

“We put together this year’s Skills Day based on feedback from our arts and culture leaders about some of the most pressing issues they are facing,” says Deborah Edward, BCA’s Executive Director. “We know this program can have a direct, positive impact on the day-to-day operations of arts and culture groups.”

Keynote speaker Simon Tam, an award-winning musician, author, entrepreneur and social justice activist will present ‘Strategic Partnerships: Building Stronger Relationships with Sponsors.’ In addition, the following workshops presentations are confirmed:

The ‘Essentials’ workshops will focus on foundational management issues:
• Foundations for Management for a Happy and Productive Staff – Susan
Wallin, Boly:Welch
• Understanding the Important Differences between Contractors and Employees – Karen O’Connor, Stoel Rives
• Financial Systems for Nonprofits – Sarah Opfer and Laura Nash, KPMG

The ‘Fresh Ideas’ workshop track is meant to spur dialogue and new
thinking for arts managers:
• Visual Thinking for Successful Planning – Tim May, XPLANE
• Best Practices for Email Engagement – Lisa Creamer, Emma
• Joining Forces: A Panel on Collaborative Marketing – Gina Morris (West End PDX, Radish Underground, PNCA BridgeLab), Helena Munday (opticnoodle, arts marketing and development consultant), Jonathan Walters (Hand2Mouth Theatre), moderated by Toni Tabora-Roberts, BCA
