The Oregon legislature is currently considering three bills, HB2008, HB2009, and SB610, all related to raising the minimum wage in Oregon. There are several different approaches being suggested by lawmakers for a phase-in of the minimum wage over several years. NAO believes the minimum wage is an issue that nonprofits need to pay attention to, discuss, and get involved with. A number of nonprofits have come out in support of the increase in the minimum wage and there are several well-written articulations of why this is an issue that nonprofits need to embrace. Nonprofits will be effected by changes to the minimum wage and this discussion is geared to help nonprofits understand the issues involved.
This Executive Director’s Network session will begin with an overview of the issue by NAO Executive Director Jim White followed by a panel discussion with nonprofit leaders to highlight the approach their nonprofit is taking on the issue, as well as how changes to the minimum wage may effect your nonprofit's staff, services, and business model. NAO recently launched a survey to our nonprofit community to understand the positions, opportunities, and concerns of nonprofits relative to the proposed legislation. The results of that survey will be discussed at the event. Panelists include Bridget Cooke, Executive Director of Adelante Mujeres, Chuck Sheketoff, Executive Director of the Oregon Center for Public Policy, and Dennis Morrow, Executive Director of Janus Youth Programs.
As this is a complex conversation which not all present will have had an opportunity to form an opinion or adopt a position, this EDN will be closed-door with no media allowed.

Chuck Sheketoff is a founder of the Oregon Center for Public Policy. The OCPP was established due to the "public interest pioneer award" Chuck received from the Stern Family Fund in September, 1997. Prior to coming to the OCPP, Chuck lobbied the Oregon State Legislature on behalf of legal aid clients and the Oregon Law Center. He represented the interests of recipients of Aid to Dependent Children (now called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families), food stamps, Medicaid/Oregon Health Plan, General Assistance and long-term care programs. Chuck is intimately familiar with Oregon's welfare system and has been a knowledgeable and harsh critic of state and federal welfare reform. He has also been actively involved in lobbying for changes to Oregon's tax system, and in 1997 he took the lead to help create two new tax credits for the working poor: the state earned income tax credit and the working family child care tax credit.
