Executive leadership transitions are moments of critical importance in the lives of nonprofit organizations. The Board of Directors has a special responsibility to lead and manage these powerful moments of change. What does it mean for the Board to “step up” at this critical juncture? What is involved in a “good process” for executive search and selection? How can board members create the conditions for a successful leadership transition?

In this interactive session, we will explore Board roles in executive leadership transitions including…

  • Managing the separation of your current executive director
  • Assessing your organization and its strategic environment to prepare for the future and understand the qualities and capabilities most needed in your next executive
  • Identifying the best option for staffing an interim period
  • Engaging appropriate expertise and support for managing an executive search (e.g., an outside consultant or skilled board member)
  • Creating a robust process for executive search and selection that taps the wisdom of your community, engaging the Board, staff and other stakeholders appropriately
  • Using the executive search as a capacity building strategy to strengthen the Board and rethink possibilities for your organization
  • Making the most of the onboarding process

As an associate with NAO’s Executive Transition Services (ETS) team, which supports Oregon nonprofits undergoing leadership change, Paula works closely with Boards of Directors as a Transition/Search Consultant and as an Interim Executive Director. In this lively session, she will highlight promising practices, offer practical suggestions, and draw from the experiences of participants.
