Nonprofit Revenue Recognition: Accounting for the Resources of Your Mission

Ecotrust Conference Center, 2nd Floor 721 NW 9th Avenue
Portland

About this event

Jessica L. Clark, CPA
FiscalWorks

Presentation & Continental Breakfast at 7:30
Networking at 9:00

Every organization requires resources to fulfill their mission. In nonprofit organizations, revenue recognition is especially complex due to the variety of transactions and stipulations surrounding each one. Accounting for the inflows often requires estimates and judgment which can lead to errors. In this session, you’ll learn the keys to understanding nonprofit revenue recognition and receive the tools you need to navigate the “grey areas”.

In this presentation, you will discover:

  • How to distinguish between exchange transactions, contributions, and agency transactions and how to account for each type.
  • How this impacts your organization’s accounting for grants, awards, sponsorships, membership fees, non-cash gifts, and other awards.
  • Why the revenue in your audited financial statements often don’t match your internal reports.

About the Presenter

Jessica Clark understands what it’s like to be on the “inside”, but utilizes her years of auditing to ensure that organizations are complying with the important rules and regulations that are expected by the stakeholders of nonprofits. She is the founder of FiscalWorks, which provides high level financial expertise to nonprofit organizations. Her model allows organizations to have a CFO within the organization without employing one full-time.

Prior to FiscalWorks, Jessica oversaw the internal operations for New Avenues for Youth, managed the non-profit assurance sector of AKT, LLC and served as the audit manager at KMPG, LLP. Jessica has extensive experience in management and accounting, and frequently speaks on panels and teaches classes on technical topics. She enjoys board education and helping members understand their role in financial matters.

Jessica is a graduate of the University of Oregon where she received a B.A. in Accounting. Jessica is a licensed CPA in the state of Oregon, a member of AICPA and OSCPA, and serves on the Board and Finance Committee of Portland area nonprofits.
