About the Presenters

Kay Sohl has provided financial management training and consultation for over 5,000 nonprofit organizations throughout the country. Kay draws upon her experience as an executive director, consultant, auditor, and Board member to create trainings designed to help nonprofit leaders communicate effectively across the barriers of accounting jargon and financial anxieties. Kay is co-author of the The Oregon Nonprofit Corporation Handbook, Fifth Edition. She founded and led TACS/Nonprofit Association of Oregon through 2011, and currently leads nonprofit fiscal leaders discussion networks nationally and in Oregon

Jessica Clark understands what it’s like to be on the “inside”, but utilizes her years of auditing to ensure that organizations are complying with the important rules and regulations that are expected by the stakeholders of nonprofits. She is the founder of FiscalWorks, which provides high level financial expertise to nonprofit organizations. Her model allows organizations to have a CFO within the organization without employing one full-time. Prior to FiscalWorks, Jessica oversaw the internal operations for New Avenues for Youth, managed the non-profit assurance sector of AKT, LLC and served as the audit manager at KMPG, LLP. Jessica has extensive experience in management and accounting, and frequently speaks on panels and teaches classes on technical topics. She enjoys board education and helping members understand their role in financial matters. Jessica is a graduate of the University of Oregon where she received a B.A. in Accounting. Jessica is a licensed CPA in the state of Oregon, a member of AICPA and OSCPA, and serves on the Board and Finance Committee of Portland area nonprofits.

Roopal Patel is currently the Deputy Controller of Mercy Corps. Roopal focuses on the financial operations of this international organization that works in the toughest places to help people leverage their local logic to pioneer innovative, sustainable solutions to help build stronger communities. Roopal’s comprehensive experience in the nonprofit, and public company sector has been critical to her success. As a management consultant for REL Consultancy, Roopal provided key advice for clients such as Sony Pictures and Rolls-Royce. Roopal graduated with a B.A. in Art History from Haverford College, and has a dual Master’s degree in International Management and Business Administration from Thunderbird and Arizona State University. Because she couldn’t get enough of school, Roopal also completed a graduate diploma in Accounting at McGill University in Québec. She is a licensed CPA in Oregon, a member of AICPA and OSCPA. In her free time, Roopal is the Board Chair of Cycle Oregon, and rides her bicycle through the many beautiful places and loves living in Portland.

As COO, Tanja Lux leads the financial and operational activities for All Hands Raised, providing strategic oversight and execution of finance & accounting, human resources, risk management, information technology, and office operations. Before joining the AHR team, Tanja was the CFO of Hacienda Community Development Corporation, and a senior tax accountant with Perkins and Company.
