FMTP runs several programs including Weed Warriors, Foot Patrol, Environmental Education and the park’s Visitor Center. For twenty years the Visitor Center (VC) has been coordinated and staffed exclusively by volunteers. We are now seeking a part-time contractor for a six-month pilot period to coordinate the VC. The VC Coordinator contractor will be responsible for volunteer coordination and management, development and maintenance of volunteer policies and procedures, and VC operation. This position requires initiative, flexibility, problem solving, and excellent communication skills.

Primary duties and responsibilities include the following:

1. Coordinate and manage VC volunteers to ensure smooth and efficient VC operations;
2. Develop and document volunteer and VC policies and procedures;
3. Ensure the VC is organized, clean, inclusive and welcoming to everyone;
4. Honor and support VC volunteers;
5. Interface with Portland Parks & Recreation staff regarding reported problems in the park and other issues; and
6. Communicate regularly with the VC commitiee of the FMTP board.

Qualifications and Requirements

Qualifications:

1. Experience managing volunteers: many tasks involved in day-to-day operations of the VC are currently handled by existing volunteers. We are seeking someone who can support these efforts with positive reinforcement and tact, not take over their work.

2. Flexibility and independent problem solving: frequent drop-ins at the VC will be required as will responding to volunteer questions and problems as they arise.

3. Excellent writing and communication skills: The contractor will be expected to draft policies and procedures for the VC, and to communicate positively and clearly with volunteers, Friends of Mt Tabor board members, and Portland Parks & Recreation staff.

4. Knowledge and appreciation of Mt. Tabor Park: service to the park and its community is the core of our mission!

Benefits

This is a contract position paying $30 per hour for up to 200 hours over 6 months. The contractor will not be considered an employee of FMTP and will be responsible for any applicable taxes. Allowed expenses will be reimbursed. The position will operate fairly independently; however, supervision and evaluation will be conducted by the FMTP board of directors via its Visitor Center sub-committee. After six months the position will be evaluated and a decision made about creating a permanent contracted position.
