Unleashing Innovation, Amplifying Impact
Keynote Speaker: Ann Mei Chang, CEO, Candid
Room: Grand Ballroom

Today’s nonprofits don’t have it easy. We face an increasingly challenging fundraising landscape, struggles with staff burnout and retention, and inequitable distribution of resources across the sector. Meanwhile, demand for our services continues to skyrocket. These dynamics leave nonprofits with limited time and resources to focus on their mission-driven work today, much less position themselves to thrive in the future. It’s clear we need better solutions if we are going to meet the moment.

Candid’s CEO Ann Mei Chang will take a deep dive into data on the sector’s current pressing challenges and share real-world examples of how data-informed decision-making can help us tackle them. She will highlight sector-level initiatives that address these challenges head-on and demonstrate how nonprofits of all sizes and missions can leverage risks and data to create more possibilities for innovation. Attendees will leave with practical tips to increase their visibility, rethink their fundraising strategy, and use data to drive greater impact.

1A – Impact: Recentering Impact through Equity-driven Evaluation
Presented by: Amani Austin, Founder, Austin Advocates With, LLC; Sonia Worcel, Principal/Owner, Strategy for Impact, LLC; and Kim Leonard, Founder/Principal, Leonard Research & Evaluation

Nonprofits and funders alike have long struggled to define and evaluate impact. Many assumptions and long-held beliefs about objectivity and rigor, scarcity, and perfectionism can also keep us from focusing on what matters most. During this interactive, discussion-based session, Amani Austin, Sonia Worcel, and Kim Leonard will share their experiences defining and measuring impact within the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors. The facilitators will also introduce concepts and frameworks (including the Equitable Evaluation Framework™) that can help us unlearn unhelpful assumptions and shift toward more meaningful impact measurement. All are welcome in this session, regardless of their role or experience with evaluation or impact measurement. Participants can expect to interact with one another as we explore questions like: What might be possible if we shift our mindsets and approaches around measuring impact? How might we tell a more meaningful, holistic, and powerful story as a result? Participants will leave with a new appreciation for what counts as ‘data’ and ‘impact,’ along with some ideas about next steps for their programs, organizations, and communications.

1B – Innovation: Leveraging Entrepreneurial Skills for Nonprofit Growth
Presented by: Ciara Pressler, Founder/CEO, PREGAME

Are you a nonprofit executive director, board member, or leader feeling the pressure of today’s economic realities? This workshop directly tackles the myth that nonprofits don’t need business skills. We’ll dive into the essential entrepreneurial strategies that will empower you to not only sustain but also grow your organization’s impact. Pregame founder Ciara Pressler will break down the business skills that she has brought to nonprofits in housing, arts, social services, the environment, and more:

  • Develop “Non-Gross” Sales Skills: Learn effective persuasion techniques to boost fundraising and build meaningful donor relationships.
  • Craft Compelling Marketing: Create a brand that cuts through the noise and resonates with funders, partners, and your community.
  • Unlock Revenue Opportunities: Explore diverse income streams beyond traditional grants and donations, including potential products, services, and events.
  • Drive Team Accountability: Develop your leadership style to prioritize results as part of your mission and values.
  • Cultivate Authentic Peer Support: Understand how to strategically connect with other nonprofit leaders to gain invaluable insights, shared experiences, and mutual encouragement amidst demanding schedules and limited resources.

This workshop provides practical takeaways and fosters connection with fellow nonprofit leaders who understand the unique challenges and opportunities you face. Leave with renewed clarity, actionable strategies, and a stronger sense of how to tap into meaningful peer support to enhance your leadership and organizational impact.

1C – Insight: Alignment for Abundance in the Workplace
Presented by: Kristin Fay Venus, Intuitive Strategist, Envision Impact Consulting

When a nonprofit’s mission, leadership, and culture are in sync, the result is a more energized team, smoother operations, and a lasting impact. This interactive session will explore how building alignment at all levels of your organization fosters ease, efficiency, and sustainable growth. Participants will learn to identify common signs of misalignment — when staff feel disconnected or decision-making stalls—and shift toward a values-driven abundance mindset. Through case studies, guided reflection, and practical tools, you’ll leave with a framework for integrating alignment practices into your leadership to achieve greater organizational impact and success.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the signs and impact of misalignment on workplace dynamics and effectiveness.
  • Apply alignment techniques to leadership, staff management, and program development.
  • Build an abundance mindset to enhance fundraising, decision-making, and workplace well-being.
  • Cultivate self-awareness and leadership practices that inspire ease, fulfillment, connection, and empowerment.

1D – Impact: Financial Management for Fundraising Professionals
Presented by: Brittany Kirk, President & Grant Practice Director, Cloudbreak Collective and Dan Tritch, Director, Your Part-Time Controller, LLC

This workshop will teach fundraisers how to understand the basics of nonprofit accounting in service of stronger, more effective collaboration between finance and fundraising teams. Fundraising and financial professionals typically have different skill sets, risk tolerance levels, and perspectives on daily nonprofit work, yet we frequently need to collaborate and make decisions.

Join a nonprofit finance specialist and a fundraising specialist as we unpack the conversations, systems, and decisions where finance and fundraising typically overlap, such as budgets, grant applications and reports, gift tracking and reconciliation, and revenue projections. Participants will leave this workshop with improved skills and knowledge to:

  • Communicate and collaborate with financial professionals (and understand frequently used nonprofit accounting jargon!)
  • Build meaningful budgets for grant applications and other fundraising strategies
  • Interpret financial instructions and attachment requirements in grant applications
  • Effectively set and track fundraising revenue targets throughout the year
  • Answer financial questions posed by board members and donors
  • Understand the financial implications of new grant or program growth opportunities
  • Untangle gift tracking discrepancies between fundraising and finance departments
  • Support accurate reporting and auditing

2A – Impact: M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Listening Session
The Trust wants to hear directly from you—nonprofit leaders on the ground—regarding key issues and factors that impact your work to help shape future investments and partnerships. Following a brief welcome and introductions, participants will break into groups of five to eight and speak with two staff from the Trust, ensuring everyone has space to be heard fully. No advanced preparation is required. Just be willing to share your experience, perspective, challenges, and hopes for the nonprofit sector and what you need from philanthropy.

This listening session is open to all conference attendees. Your nonprofit does not need to be a current Trust grantee. Your voice is crucial to ensure the Trust reaches beyond its existing connections to partner with and support an increasing range of organizations.

2B – Innovation: Demystifying AI for Insights and Impact
Presented by: Samhir Vasdev, Founder, Dev Design

In our resource-constrained nonprofit contexts, generative AI tools offer small but mighty gains in productivity, efficiency, and scale in how nonprofit teams surface insights and communicate the impact of their work. But understanding the ever-changing constellation of AI tools and techniques can be overwhelming, making it hard to evaluate and adopt generative AI for insights and impact.

Designed specifically for individuals and teams at mission-driven organizations, this workshop makes generative AI practical, relevant, and accessible to those with little or no experience using these tools. Through fun exercises and Q&A, this hands-on session will cultivate a safe space to responsibly explore the promise—and perils—of this technology. Skeptics and early adopters alike will leave with tangible new skills and critical insights into how generative AI can help or hurt data analysis, research for a new program, and marketing and storytelling. We’ll also cover specific strategies and tips to promote responsible AI adoption and readiness within your organization.

Bring your computer and your burning AI questions to make the most of the session!

2C – Insight: Dabbling in the Data: Hands-On Meaning Making for Teams
Presented by: Corey Newhouse, Founder, Public Profit

Mission-driven professionals collect data to enhance their practice, demonstrate effectiveness, and make informed decisions, and a team-based approach is a powerful way to achieve this goal. For many teams, however, data analysis can seem like a daunting task that requires specialized knowledge and years of training.

Join the Public Profit team for three facilitated, hands-on activities to explore and analyze common types of data. One of these activities is Mind the Gap, where we will examine differences between two sample data sets through mapping them, creating dot plots to visualize the differences, and discussing what we see. This simple exercise allows participants to investigate systematic relationships between data sets and practice collaborative data interpretation. Participants will also receive a free digital copy of Dabbling in the Data: A Hands-On Guide to Participatory Data Analysis to start developing a plan to implement these methods in their work.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand why collaborative data interpretation leads to more rigorous and robust decisions.
  • Preview at least three hands-on data analysis activities for teams.
  • Begin crafting a Dabbling action plan for your organization.

2D – Insight: Reinventing Your Nonprofit’s Business Model [11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.]
Presented by: Scott Schaffer, Principal and Lead Consultant, Public Interest Management Group

Emerging events have led many nonprofits to question basic assumptions about their business models. Is our major funding stream stable? Can we rely on historical assumptions about our operations? Are our core programs at risk? Will we remain sustainable in our present form? These and other questions are on the minds of many organizational leaders. This 90-minute workshop provides a framework to think about these big questions and possible pathways toward adaptation to a changed environment. We will draw on applied research regarding best practices—success factors for nonprofits—to identify desired characteristics of organizations set up to thrive in the future. This session will be a mix of content related to organizational restructuring and related success factors with an interactive discussion around a case study.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the context of business model change as adaptation
  • Communicate best practices around nonprofits’ revenue streams
  • Identify several restructuring pathways to consider in planning
  • Articulate a process to consider major organizational change.

Enjoy a plated lunch, included with your registration.

3A – Impact: Mission Possible: Creating a Work Culture People Brag About
Presented by: Beth Gibbs, HR Consultant, Gibbs HR Consulting

Employees perform their best when they feel valued and supported in the workplace. But as many nonprofits face external threats to their operations, investments in professional development and other aspects of work culture may be the first budget items to go. How can employers continue supporting staff during these hard times? The key lies in making meaningful investments that staff actually want.

In this session, we will unpack why investing in staff and teams shouldn’t fall by the wayside, even in the most challenging of times. We will explore strategies that management can use to assess staff needs, get to the core of what matters, and make investments that are both feasible and relevant to staff – keeping in mind that effective work culture investments don’t always require big budgets. Simple, thoughtful actions can be just as effective in shaping a culture that makes people want to stay and advance a nonprofit’s mission.

This session is ideal for HR professionals, nonprofit leaders, and supervisors who want to learn adaptive strategies for supporting staff, strengthening teams, and driving engagement. You will leave with information on:

  • Using listening skills to uncover what employees truly value.
  • Designing staff feedback and recognition systems that don’t break the bank.
  • Creating professional growth experiences, including stretch projects and job shadowing.
  • Crafting work policies that build a culture of trust.

3B – Innovation: Crisis and Opportunity: How Funders & Nonprofits Can Respond to the New Funding Landscape
Presented by: Arthur Davis, Grant Writer and Strategic Planning Consultant, Arthur Davis Consulting, LLC

Nonprofits are facing critical funding challenges due to cuts in federal funding, a potential recession, and increased competition for fewer dollars. This session will begin with a presentation on both grant readiness for community-based organizations and how funders can approach grantmaking to support nonprofits’ new reality. Then, representatives from Oregon foundations will participate in a facilitated a panel discussion on how nonprofits and funders can work strategically in these challenging times. This session grew out of a funder landscape study conducted on behalf of Oregon Health Authority by Arthur Davis Consulting, LLC, and Oregon Public Health Institute that included interviews with 21 Oregon funders, nonprofits, and convening organizations.

Facilitator: Emily Henke, Executive Director, Oregon Public Health Institute

3D: Facilitated Networking Activity

You asked, we listened! This ain’t your average networking session. No stiff small talk, no awkward hovering by the coffee station.  Come to relax and meet people you might actually want to talk to again.

We’ll move (yes, physically—don’t worry, nothing requiring spandex), laugh, and share what’s been bouncing around in our brains from the day’s sessions. You’ll leave with at least three new connections, a few great ideas, and maybe even a good story to tell later. All centered on this year’s theme: Insight, Innovation & Impact.

Come for the camaraderie, stay because you forgot you were “networking” in the first place.

Room: Columbia Event Center A

Join your fellow conference attendees for a reception sponsored by the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust in celebration of their 50th anniversary. This is your opportunity to relax and kick back with hors d’oeuvres, a cold beverage, and good conversation.

Presented by: Donald Summers, Founder & Executive Director, Altruist Impact Accelerator

This session introduces the Altruist Impact System (AIS), a comprehensive organizational management system that consistently catalyzes a median of 25% annual growth in revenue and social impact, regardless of mission, location, or organizational development. Over the past 20 years, AIS has helped generate over $1 billion in new revenue and fueled transformational programs in human services, education, sustainability, and other fields.

  • Practical steps for aligning board and staff teams who embrace entrepreneurial principles and adaptive management practices.

Attendees will also be invited to join the Altruist Impact Accelerator, a 501(c)(3) organization offering peer support, expert guidance, and an extensive library of resources.

4B – Insight: Beyond the Façade: Addressing Pseudo-Allyship and the Legacy of White Feminism in Nonprofit Leadership + Panel Debrief

This panel discussion will dive into the complex issues of pseudo-allyship and the historical impact of white feminism in nonprofit leadership, exploring how these dynamics affect trust and authentic allyship within organizations.

Participants will explore the pervasiveness of performative gestures, where individuals or groups present themselves as allies without taking meaningful actions to support marginalized communities. We will examine the historical influence of white feminism in nonprofit leadership roles, addressing how this legacy has shaped organizational practices and perceptions of trust. Specifically, this conversation will examine the intersection of power dynamics, hidden biases and assumptions, and entitlement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of these complex issues and be equipped to promote authentic allyship and trust within their organizations, creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

This workshop will conclude with a facilitated debrief session for participants to discuss insights and identify actionable next steps for building trust and inclusion.

Facilitator: Erica Briggs, Nonprofit Education Specialist, NAO

4C – Impact: Creating a Brave Leadership Team
Presented by: Chris Wallace Caldwell, Founder & Principal Consultant, and Lauren Moreno, Senior Consultant & Director of Community Impact, Catalysis, LLC

What would it look like if your leadership team could truly guide your organization to greater impact? Creating a “culture” of exceptional leadership is not about getting the right people in the room. It’s about creating the space to do the brave work.

Our teams struggle when they are not fully supported to have hard conversations, make decisions, and navigate change. In this workshop, we ground in a deeper understanding of why any team might struggle and develop practical tools to take your team to the next level. Supporting your team is one of the most important things you can do to amplify your impact and meet your mission.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Distinguish between the internal factors (personal dynamics and dysfunctions) and external factors (structures and social context) that can get in the way of developing a cohesive team
  • Understand of the common dysfunctions and obstacles of leadership teams
  • Identify the unique barriers your team may face
  • Develop a better sense of the purpose and unique value of your specific team
  • Build a set of practical and actionable agreements customized for your team that can be deployed that create a safety net for you to hold tough conversations, hold each other accountable, and meet your collective goals

4D – Impact: Getting to What Matters: A Fresh Approach to Evaluating and Communicating Your Impact
Presented by: Steve Patty, Principal Consultant, Dialogues In Action

This is a time when demonstrating your impact is critical. But communities and people are complicated. How can you help stakeholders cut through the distractions and pay attention to the things that matter most? This session will give you models, insights, and practical techniques to gather data on the deep, transformational change you make in the lives of people and their communities. You will glean innovative evaluations from over 500 nonprofits and learn how AI can analyze qualitative data quickly without undermining human nuances and human touch. You will discover how evaluation can be generative and liberating for program participants, not just informative for your staff. You will also hear lessons learned from agencies that have developed habits of credible self-studies. The aim of this session is to provide you with a fresh approach to evaluating and communicating your impact and give you tools to use immediately to make your evaluation generative for all.
